Sunday’s Obituary: Andrew Groff

Death notices have long been posted in local newspapers. Recently, I stumbled across the death notice of an Andrew Groff in the Intelligencer & Weekly Advertiser, dated Saturday, 20 January 1816.

His notice reads:
Died, in this borough, on Tuesday last, in the 76th year of his age, Andrew Groff, Esq., a very worthy and respectable character. He was born in Lancaster, and served many years, as an Associate Judge for the county.

So, who was Andrew Groff?
He died on Tuesday, 16 January 1816. He was in his 76th year so he was born in 1740 . He was born, worked, and died in Lancaster

A quick Google search reveals an Andrew Graff (another common way of spelling Groff) born 4 September 1740 and died 15 January 1816. He married Catharine Grafford on 19 January 1762 at the First Reformed Congregation, Lancaster. They had two children: Maria Magdalena Graff and Elizabeth Groff.
