Mice caused the fire at the Children’s Home On This Day in 1880. The fire occurred in a frame building in the rear of the Children’s Home. It originated in the flooring between the first and second floors and spread through the plaster and frame work.
An employee of the Home attempted to put the fire out, with
the assistance of some of the larger boys. Unable to do so, he then ran to the
American Hose house and alerted them. The fire company arrived on scene and
extinguished the fire just as it had reached the door to the main building.
There was considerable damage.
The fire was started by mice. It is believed that the mice
carried matches between the plastering and the floor boards. While doing so,
the matches were lit.
