On This Day: Church thieves remain at large


The thieves who robbed a Lancaster County church remain at large On This Day in 1880. The cornerstone of the Bergstrass Lutheran Church in Akron, Ephrata Township had been broken open and money taken. The money had been put in ther when the cornerstone was laid in 1848.  

The thieves had to remove approximately 80 bricks and break a corner of the stone in order to get at their two dollar loot. The books and papers that were also in there were simply left laying in the yard. The theft occurred 9 July. Tramps are suspected to be the thiefs.
