On This Day: Fire destroys Intercourse store

A weekend fire destroyed a store and house belonging to Moses Eaby of Intercourse, reported the Lancaster Daily Intelligencer On This Day in 1881. Eaby’s store and house was near the west end of the village of Intercourse in Lancaster County . The fire reportedly began in the garret. Much of the dry goods and other valuables in the store were removed before the fire engulfed the building. The store was run by Moses’ son, Jason Eaby. Moses’ other son, Harry, resided in the dwelling part of the building. Moses himself built the two story brick building about 50 years prior.   The fire did spread to adjacent buildings, including Jason’s dwelling, but the fires were put out and those buildings were saved. The store was expected to be rebuilt.    Source Lancaster Daily Intelligencer. ( Lancaster , PA ), 3 October 1881. Chronicling America : Historic American Newspapers .
