The Continental Army had just enjoyed two significant victories in Trenton and Princeton .

By setting
up his winter headquarters at Morristown ,
he gained quite the vantage point. The Great Swamp
and the Watchung Mountains provided a natural defence. He
could protect the roads leading to both Philadelphia
and to New England .
