Memorial Day

Memorial Day is a time to remember those who died while serving in our nation's military. There are three men buried in the Holy Ghost Ukrainian Cemetery (Valley Township, Chester County, PA) who were Killed In Action. They are: Andrew Buckle, William Grycky, and Paul Kurenda. Tombstone Tuesday: Catherine Kurenda Yuzwiak

Catherine Kurenda Yuzwiak is my Baba’s sister. She is buried with her husband, John Yuzwiak, at the Holy Ghost Ukrainian Cemetery in Valley Township , just outside Coatesville in Chester County . She passed 37 years ago yesterday so I thought it fitting to feature her today on Tombstone Tuesday.   Catherine was born on 1 January 1912 to John and Frances Skrabalak Kurenda. She married John Yuzwiak (1904 – 1984) on 29 June 1929 at Holy Ghost Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (as it was then called). They had two sons: John and Stephen. Sunday's Obituary: Ann Horblinski Leveille

This past week our Parish Family lost a dear woman, Ann Horblinski Leveille. I felt horrible about missing her funeral. I do not read the Daily Local often so I did not see her obituary until after the fact. No email went out like it normally does from our parish. I found out from a friend's Facebook status. ... Vichnaya Pamyat.   Her obituary, as it was printed in the Daily Local: Ann Horblinski Leveille, 91, of Coatesville passed peacefully Tuesday, September 16, 2014 with her family by her side at Neighborhood Hospice Inpatient Unit, West Chester. Born in Philadelphia, she was the daughter of the late Elias Alex and Catherine Hawrylyk Horblinski and the wife of the late William Joseph Leveille with whom she shared 45 years of marriage before his death in 1999.   Geo. W. Babel Jr Born & Died May 30, 1938   buried at Holy Ghost Ukrainian Cemetery Valley Township, Chester County, PA     George was the son of George William Babel and Helen Marie Taylor. George was stillborn at Coatesville Hospital. The family lived at 1053 Rock Run Road, Coatesville. His death certificate reveals he was a large child at 11 lbs 2 oz. Hough Age 59 of Downingtown, PA passed away on Thursday, April 21, 2005 at his home.Born in Philadelphia, PA, he was the son of the late Edward Hough and the late Mildred Benedetto Hough Farina. Ed owned and operated the Edward J. Hough Company. He was a former board member of Homemaker Health Services, a member of the Downingtown Lions Club and Brandywine Country Club. Military Monday: Memorial Day

Memorial Day has come to celebrate and honor all veterans who have passed however it is really a time to remember and honor those who gave their lives during military service. It was originally called Dedication Day and was created after the Civil War to remember all those who died during that war. Over time, it was expanded to all those who lost their lives in service. Every year the local (Coatesville) American Legion goes around and visits the various cemeteries and does a service at each for all who have fallen in the line of duty, as well as all veterans. There are so many cemeteries in the Coatesville area that they literally have to do this a couple days to get everyone done. Our cemetery - Holy Ghost Ukrainian Cemetery - is always visited the third Sunday of May. The service rotates among our veterans, although all are honored.
