Tombstone Tuesday: William & Elizabeth Kunkle

William and Elizabeth Kunkle are buried together in the old German Reformed Church Cemetery on Sawmill Road in Strasburg Township . The cemetery which is full of Eckmans and of course these Kunkles, is situated on what is now private property. However it is along the roadside and the family there maintains it for the most part. My girls and I stopped by recently and took this photo then.   Tombstone Tuesday is a genealogical prompt of GeneaBloggers.   © Jeanne Ruczhak-Eckman, 2015

Tombstone Tuesday: William Aldus Eckman

William Aldus Eckman (1871-1950) is buried at the New Providence Mennonite Cemetery in New Providence, Lancaster County . He is buried with his wife, Annie E. Stively (1869-1911) and their infant son Horace W. Eckman (1907-1908).   William was born on 20 April 1871, the son of Aldus John Eckman and his first wife Amelia Kunkle. He died in September 1950.   I know little of Anna Elizabeth. Horace Whitman Eckman was born on 23 March 1907 and sadly died the following year.   William and Anna had five children: Elizabeth A.; Horace Whitman; John Frederick; Martha; and William Edward.   I have looked for William for some time. His father, Aldus, is my husband's great grandfather. William had one brother (in addition obviously to the step siblings from Aldus' second marriage) Ulysses, who is buried over at Zion UCC also in New Providence, with their mother Amelia Kunkle Eckman.   Tombstone Tuesday is a genealogical prompt of GeneaBloggers. ...

Tombstone Tuesday: Ulysses S Eckman

Ulysses S Eckman (1873-1873) is buried at the Zion Reformed Cemetery in New Providence. He is buried near his mother, Amelia Kunkle Eckman .     This innocent, son of Aldus John & Amelia Eckman, lived less than a month. He was born 13 February 1873 and passed 5 March 1873.   Tombstone Tuesday is a genealogical prompt of GeneaBloggers.   © Jeanne Ruczhak-Eckman, 2015

Tombstone Tuesday: Amelia Kunkle Eckman

Amelia Kunkle Eckman (1852-1873) is buried at the Zion Reformed Cemetery in New Providence, Lancaster County. She is buried near her infant son, Ulysses S. Eckman.   Amelia was born in October 1852 to William and Elizabeth Swisher Kunkle. She married Aldus John Eckman sometime between July 1870 and April 1871. I believe they married late July or August of 1870. I came to this date simply because the 1870 US Census, dated July 1870, shows 19 Amelia living at home with her parents and siblings. Her first child was born in April 1871. Going backwards from that time, sets the date approximately August 1870.   Their first son, William, was born in 1871 and lived a full life, passing in 1950. The second, mentioned above, lived less than a month. Ulysses was born 13 February 1873 and passed 5 March 1873. Amelia died two days after Ulysses was born.   Tombstone Tuesday is a genealogical prompt of GeneaBloggers.   © Jeanne Ruczhak-Eckman, 2015

My Family Calendar This Week

Birthdays Happy birthday this week to Francis Stuczynski. May God grant you all Many Years.    Memory Eternal Today is the 136 th anniversary of the passing of John W. Deyoe and 142 years since Amelia Kunkle Eckman passed away. My cousin Deborah Sammons also passed on this day in 1974; she survived only a few hours. John (1826-1879) is hubby’s 2 nd great uncle; he is the son of John W. and Mary Schemerhorn Deyoe and husband of Rachel Caroline Huggins. Amelia (1852-1873) was the first wife of Aldus John Eckman, hubby’s great grandfather. She died of complications relating to childbirth and is buried with the son – Ulysses – who did not survive long.    Monday is the 94 th anniversary of the passing of Martha Durkin O’Flaherty, my 2 nd great grandmother. She is the daughter of Patrick and Abyan Murphy Durkin and is my immigrant ancestor of that line.   Franklin Still passed away 84 years ago Tuesday. He was my 2 nd great grandfather. He w...

Tombstone Tuesday: Jacob Kunkle

I “met” Jacob Kunkle on a walk through the cemetery adjacent Zion UCC in New Providence. Jacob, according to his stone, was born 19 September 1822 and died 7 July 1906. His wife, Elizabeth, is buried next to him.     Elizabeth predeceased him. Jacob appears on the 1900 Census as a widower. He is a boarder living with James and Lizzie Broome and their daughter Carrie. Jacob lists his occupation as a tanner. The census also shows that both of Jacob’s parents were born in Pennsylvania . They are all living in Providence Township , Lancaster County .     Tombstone Tuesday is a genealogical prompt of GeneaBloggers.   Photo and text by Jeanne Ruczhak-Eckman © Jeanne Ruczhak-Eckman, 2015

Wednesday's Child: Ulysses Eckman

Little Ulysses S Eckman is buried at the Zion Reformed Church in New Providence, Lancaster County. He was the infant son of Aldus John Eckman and his first wife Amelia C. Kunkle. He was born 13 February 1875 and passed less than a month later, on the fifth of March. He is buried next to his mother near Aldus' parents and siblings. Amelia died, assumably from complications of childbirth, on 15 February 1873. Photo: Jeanne Ruczhak-Eckman

Sorting Saturday: Tackling the Eckman File

Yesterday I received an email from a relative of my husband's. While I did not immediately place the person (last name is Burton), I have actually connected the two lines! So today I decided to tackle my Eckman file. In organizing my information, I started a long time ago to put "extra" family members in a Surname Folder. By extra I simply mean family members who I have simply not confirmed their placement in the family yet. Needless to say, the Eckman Folder is quite large! Mr. Burton is also descended from Jerome Hieronimus Eckman & Anna Barbara Slaymaker. The two had 12 children. One of those children was John Martin Eckman who married Elizabeth Sides. They had nine children. My husband is descended from their daughter Elizabeth. Mr. Burton is descended from Elizabeth's brother Henry! As I was sorting through the information in the folder, I focused on that particular line. I found a letter/package I received back in 2000 from a gentleman in Arizona. In it...

Ulrich Eckman

I received an email about an earlier post on Alonzo Smedley Eckman recently and the woman mentioned she had not heard of Ulrich Eckman. So who is Ulrich? Ulrich is the father of Johannes Eckman and his brother Hans Jacob Eckman. Hans and his line settled in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania before some trickled down to Maryland. Johannes and his line settled in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania where few have left. Alonzo's parents did leave but after their passing he returned to live with an aunt and uncle in Fulton Township, Lancaster County. Following Johannes ... Johannes immigrated in 1727 and came into Philadelphia. He is listed as the "primary immigrant" so I think it is safe to conclude (esp when combined with other information) that his father Ulrich did not immigrate. (Source: COUSINS, ELIZABETH. Immigrants Into Pennsylvania, September 1727-September 1732. np: Pathfinders, nd. 51p. -- as per Ancestry.com). Johannes married Eva Dorthea Seitz in Germany and the ...
