President Obama has issued, like many Presidents before him, a Proclamation announcing Veterans Day. Today is a day we – as a nation – honor our veterans.   The Proclamation reads: The United States military is the strongest, most capable fighting force the world has ever known.  The brave men and women of our Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard demonstrate a resolute spirit and unmatched selflessness, and their service reminds us there are few things more American than giving of ourselves to make a difference in the lives of others.  On Veterans Day, we reflect on the immeasurable burdens borne by so few in the name of so many, and we rededicate ourselves to supporting those who have worn  America 's uniform and the families who stand alongside them.    Our true strength as a Nation is measured by how we take care of our veterans when they return home, and my Administration is committed to ensuring our heroes and their loved...

Veterans' Day is a day to remember, appreciate and thank all the service members and their families who have served our country. The day got its start in November 1919, when - a year after World War I, known as "the Great War", came to an end - President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as Armistice Day. Today was known as Armistice Day for many years as people remembered the horrors and the heroes of the "war to end all wars" ... and then it happened again. We found ourselves in the midst of the Second World War. In 1954 the wording was officially changed from Armistice Day to Veterans' Day. In addition the wording was changed from honoring those who fought in WWI to "honor American veterans of all wars." Today that has loosened up - though not officially - to honor all those who have served, including those in peace time. Yesterday I mentioned my side of the family who had served in the military. Today I would like to recognize some of my husband's side. Eckman (great granduncle) - Mechanic US Amb Corps Unit 583 - WW2 John Francis Deyoe (uncle) - Army - WW2 John C Eckman Jr (Uncle Bud) - Army - WW2 Thank you also to Frank Eckman III (nephew) who is currently serving with the Marines in Japan. I know there are many others who have served in the past. Thank you to everyone.
