Amazing Grace is
a deep soulful song that transcends time and religions. It is sung by Catholics
and Protestants. It is often referred to as an African American Spiritual. The
song was initially simply called “1 Chronicles 17:16-17” and was first used On
This Day in 1773 by clergyman John Newton in his New Year’s Day Sermon. Newton served the town of Olney ,
England .
A personal note:
I LOVE this hymn. However until I researched it today I did not know it was
from 1773 and that an English clergyman was credited with it. I really thought
it was an African American Spiritual that others just assimilated!
On This Day is a prompt I started last month to further
explore historical events. I will make every effort to keep events localized to
that of my research or research I am conducting for others. However, from time
to time, it will simply be a subject that captured my attention.
Some posts
will be brief while others may be more detailed.
